so once you get your goal structure set 00:00:04

so once you get your goal structure set up you think okay if I could have this 00:00:07

life it looks like that might be worth 00:00:08

living despite the fact that it's gonna 00:00:11

be you know anxiety provoking and 00:00:12

threatening and there's going to be some 00:00:15

suffering and loss involved in all of 00:00:16

that obviously the goal is to have a 00:00:17

vision for your life such that all 00:00:20

things considered that justifies your 00:00:23

effort okay so then what do you do well 00:00:26

then then you turn down to the micro 00:00:29

routines it's like okay well this is 00:00:31

what I'm aiming for how does that 00:00:32

instantiate itself day to day week to 00:00:34

week month to month and that's where 00:00:37

something like a schedule can be 00:00:39

unbelievably useful Google Calendar it's 00:00:40

like make a damn schedule and stick to 00:00:43

it 00:00:45

okay so what's the rule with the 00:00:45

schedule it's not a bloody prison that's 00:00:47

the first thing that people do wrong is 00:00:50

well I don't like to have follow a 00:00:52

schedule it's like well what kind of 00:00:53

schedule are you setting up well I 00:00:55

should I have to do this then I have to 00:00:57

do this then I have to do this you know 00:00:58

and then I just go play video games 00:01:00

because who wants to do all these things 00:01:02

that I have to do it's like wrong set 00:01:03

the damn schedule up so that you have 00:01:06

the day you want that's the trick it's 00:01:08

like okay I've got tomorrow if I was 00:01:11

gonna set it up so it was the best 00:01:13

possible day I could have practically 00:01:14

speaking what would it look like well 00:01:18

then you schedule that and obviously 00:01:21

there's a bit of responsibility that's 00:01:22

gonna go along with that because if you 00:01:24

have any sense one of the things that 00:01:25

you're going to insist upon is that at 00:01:28

the end of the day you're not in worse 00:01:29

shape than you were then then at the 00:01:31

beginning of the day right that's a 00:01:33

stupid day if you have a bunch of those 00:01:35

in a row you just dig you know you dig 00:01:37

yourself a hole and then you bury 00:01:39

yourself and it's like sorry that's just 00:01:40

not a good strategy it's a bad strategy 00:01:42

so maybe 20% of your day has to be 00:01:45

responsibility and obligation or maybe 00:01:48

it's more than that depending on how far 00:01:50

behind you are but even that you can you 00:01:51

can ask yourself okay well I've got 00:01:54

these responsibilities I have to 00:01:56

schedule the damn things in what's the 00:01:57

right ratio of responsibility to reward 00:02:00

and you can ask yourself that just like 00:02:02

you'd negotiate with someone who is 00:02:04

working for you it's like okay you got 00:02:06

work tomorrow okay so I want you to work 00:02:07

tomorrow and you might say okay well 00:02:10

what are you gonna do for me 00:02:11

that makes it likely that I'll work for 00:02:13

you well you could ask yourself that you 00:02:15

know maybe you do an hour of 00:02:17

responsibility and then you play a video 00:02:20

game for 15 minutes I don't know 00:02:22

whatever turns your crank man but you 00:02:23

know you have to negotiate with yourself 00:02:25

and not tyrannize yourself like you're 00:02:28

negotiating with someone that you care 00:02:30

for that you would like to be productive 00:02:32

and have a good life and and that's how 00:02:34

you make the schedule it's like and then 00:02:36

you look at the day and you think well 00:02:38

if I had that day that'd be good great 00:02:39

you know and you you're useless and 00:02:42

horrible so you'll probably only hit it 00:02:44

with about 70% accuracy but that beats 00:02:45

the hell out of zero right and if you 00:02:48

hit it even with 50% accuracy another 00:02:50

rule is well aim for 51% the next week 00:02:53

or 50 and a half percent for God's sake 00:02:56

or because you're gonna hit that 00:02:59

position where things start to loop back 00:03:01

positively and spiral you upward and so 00:03:03

so that's one way that you can work on 00:03:07

your conscientiousness is a plan of life 00:03:09

you'd like to have and and you do that 00:03:11

partly by referring to social norms 00:03:14

that's more or less rescuing your father 00:03:17

from the belly of the whale but the way 00:03:19

other way you do that is by having a 00:03:21

little conversation with yourself about 00:03:22

as if you don't really know who you are 00:03:24

because you know what you're like you 00:03:27

won't do what you're told you won't do 00:03:28

what you tell yourself to do you must 00:03:30

have noticed that it's like you're a bad 00:03:32

employee and a worse boss and both of 00:03:34

those work you know for you you don't 00:03:37

know what you want to do and then when 00:03:40

you tell yourself what to do you don't 00:03:41

do it anyway so you should fire yourself 00:03:42

and find someone else to beat but but 00:03:44

you know my point is is that you have to 00:03:47

understand that you're not your own 00:03:49

servant so to speak you're someone that 00:03:51

you have to negotiate with and that's 00:03:52

and you're someone that you want to 00:03:54

present the opportunity of having a good 00:03:57

life to and that's hard for people 00:03:59

because they don't like themselves very 00:04:01

much so you know they're always like 00:04:02

cracking the whip and then 00:04:05

procrastinating and cracking the whip 00:04:06

and then procrastinating and it's like 00:04:08

god it's so boring and such a pathetic 00:04:09

way of spending your time and you know 00:04:12

what that's like because you probably 00:04:14

waste like six hours a day and I think 00:04:15

we get an economic calculation about 00:04:17

that a while back right your time is 00:04:19

probably worth 50 bucks an hour 00:04:20

something like that I mean you're not 00:04:22

getting paid that now but you're young 00:04:24

and 00:04:26

this is investment time and what you do 00:04:27

now is going to multiply its effects in 00:04:29

the future so so let's say it's 50 bucks 00:04:31

an hour which is perfectly reasonable so 00:04:33

if you weigh 6 hours a day and you are 00:04:35

then you're wasting about $2,000 a week 00:04:37

or about $100,000 a year so like go 00:04:39

ahead but that's what it's costing you 00:04:42

every hour and you need to know what 00:04:44

your damn time is worth so let's say 00:04:45

it's not 50 bucks it's 30 whatever maybe 00:04:47

it's a hundred it's somewhere in that 00:04:50

range one of the things you should be 00:04:52

asking yourself is when you spend an 00:04:54

hour was that well what if I paid 00:04:56

someone 50 bucks to have had that hour 00:04:58

and if the answer is no it's like well 00:05:00

maybe you should do something else with 00:05:02

your time and it depends on whether or 00:05:04

not you think that your time is worth 00:05:06

while but the funny thing about not 00:05:07

assuming that is if you assume your time 00:05:09

isn't worthwhile what happens is you 00:05:11

don't just sit around sort of randomly 00:05:14

in a state of responsibility list bliss 00:05:15

what you do is you suffer existentially 00:05:18

and so that seems like a stupid solution 00:05:21
