...book called "A Billion Wicked Thoughts", that was written by a bunch of engineers at Google. 00:00:00

And they were looking at billions of search... billions of Google searches. 00:00:05

And you know, there's no shortage of pornography on the Internet. 00:00:10

And there's much less by proportion, than there was when the Internet was first invented. 00:00:13

And it's so interesting, because it actually turned out, that one of the things that drove 00:00:18

the development of the Internet and the technology - was the proclivity of young men to search out sexually provocative images. 00:00:23

That was, what was at the forefront of the development of the net. Extraordinarily interesting. 00:00:29

They were motivated to use it for that purpose, and that provided the platform from which it emerged. Amazing. 00:00:34

Anyways... 00:00:42

The Google engineers looked at pornographic search processes, 00:00:44

and then segregated male searches from female searches. 00:00:49

And what they found, was that the males searched out images - surpise surprise, no one considers that, you know, particularly interesting. 00:00:53

But the females searched out literary representations of pornography, it was written. 00:01:00

And so, I can give you an example of that, if... 00:01:04

You know about harlequin romances, does everybody still know about those? Anybody not know about those? 00:01:07

Okay well, they're mass-market romances, and of a very stereotypical type. 00:01:12

And uh... 00:01:17

They're- the original ones were pretty harmless, in terms of: no violence, and no real sexual content. 00:01:18

But, that was 40 years ago, and they differentiated tremendously, and now there's 00:01:25

hardcore harlequin romances, with particularly garish covers, 00:01:30

and then there's the old, you know, more tame, basic, sexless and aggression-less 00:01:35

romances, where everything is implied, and not explicit. 00:01:41

But the explicit ones exist. 00:01:45

So, they did a plot analysis of the typical pornographic female fantasy. 00:01:49

Well, and it was so... it's so comical. Because engineers did this, 00:01:54

and social scientists would never do this, because they'd be 00:01:58

probably too concerned about the ethics of it, or some damn thing. 00:02:01

But engineers, you know, they'll just plow ahead with no concern whatsoever for such things. 00:02:04

And they actually discover things that way. And so, 00:02:09

they discovered the basic plot of the female pornographic literary product. 00:02:12

And they identified... 00:02:18

So basically, what happened was that a innocent, well-meaning and attractive young woman 00:02:20

encounters a male, who's a bit of a monster. 00:02:26

And the monster- There's 5 types of classic male monster. For all you males who want to know, this is what you can become. 00:02:29

Vampire, that's a good one, 00:02:36

werewolf, 00:02:38

billionaire, 00:02:40

pirate, 00:02:42

and surgeon. 00:02:43

Okay, so that's very interesting, because... 00:02:45

Well first of all, there's a dominance thing, there's a- 00:02:47

Now, you're actually blushing, you know. You're actually blushing about that. That's very, very funny, so... 00:02:50

Hah! 00:02:56

Sorry to point it out, but it's so comical, you know. 00:02:57

[student replies and apologizes] 00:02:59

I know, I know! It's so funny, I was reading this. 00:03:00

I was reading this, it was just cracking me up! I thought "Oh my God, really?" 00:03:03

Pirate, vampire... oh, that explains it, what about all these damn vampire shows, right? 00:03:07

They're so popular online, they're so popular on Netflix. 00:03:12

Oh yes, and then there's the werewolf; there's nothing sexier than a werewolf, apparently. 00:03:16

But I mean, so there's predatory dominance, that's implicit in that, right? 00:03:20

With the billionaire it's more abstract, but clearly that's an indication of 00:03:25

very high success in the male dominance hierarchy, so. 00:03:28

But there's this desire for aggression, that's in that. A real aggression, right? 00:03:32

And it's not surprising to me at all. It makes perfect sense. 00:03:37

Um, 00:03:41

but the basic plot is, that the woman encounters this... 00:03:41

...mysterious and aggressive male, and tames him. 00:03:46

That's the female hero myth, as far as I can tell. It's "Beauty and the Beast". 00:03:53

And so, it's because... 00:03:57

Well, there's no fun in taming someone, who's already tame. 00:04:00

And what makes you think, you really want someone who's tame anyways? There's no interest in that. 00:04:04

Plus, when Chaos manifests itself, what makes you think that someone tame is gonna be good for anything? 00:04:08

And it's a real question. And so, that aggression is absolutely vital, it's absolutely necessary. 00:04:16

But, because it's incredibly dangerous - which, of course it is - it has to be civilized. 00:04:22

And so what happens, is that the archetypal female in these pornographic romances 00:04:28

seduces and tames the aggressive male. 00:04:33

And that's her encounter with Chaos. Now, it's more, it's more complex... 00:04:36

Of course, females. They're more complicated, and that's exactly how it is. 00:04:42

And it's no wonder, because their lives are more complicated. 00:04:44

But - okay... 00:04:48
